People with lung problems aren't the only ones who struggle with mucus. Since we started providing Effervescent N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC for short) mostly for lung patients, we have had an increasing number of people looking for help with the mucus associated with ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. When a professional ALS counselor first contacted us about getting NAC for ALS patients, we started researching internet information on any studies done specifically on ALS and NAC, and what we found out was what he already knew.

NAC is a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, and may be the most thoroughly tested and documented supplement in the world. Using guaifenesin ( Mucinex) and dextromethorphan, is only intended for short term (7 days) use, and has warnings not to combine with over 30 prescription drugs. It's meant for people with colds who need a little help getting over the congestion. It is not meant for serious, long term use. NAC, on the other hand, has been proven safe over decades of research for long term use.

But is all NAC the same? No.

After hours and hours of internet research, our founder learned about the value of NAC for lung patients, and knew he wanted to try it, but wanted to make sure he got top quality. Wouldn't you? Then, either by accident or providence, he stumbled across a Stanford University study of N-acetyl Cysteine that led to the perfect answer for him.

It said that N-acetyl cysteine destabilizes and degrades in the presence of air. The longer it's exposed, the weaker it gets. All those capsules and tablets sitting on the shelf at American health stores somewhere have air in the bottle, just oxidizing the quality away. Worse than that, this oxidation slowly turns it into 'di-NAC', which actually has the "opposite immunologic effect of the NAC!" Why does this fact go unmentioned?

The most probable reason is that the FDA does not regulate the production and packaging of nutriceutical products made in this country, so "neither the content nor purity of those NAC formulations can be reliably judged." The production methods may not include the necessary means to prevent the oxidation either during manufacture or product storage, since that would greatly increase the costs of production. That's why a hundred capsules are so inexpensive.

Increasing evidence implicates oxidative damage as a major mechanism in the pathogenesis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). We examined the effect of preventative treatment with N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), an agent that reduces free radical damage, in transgenic mice with a superoxide dismutase (SODI) mutation (G93A), used as an animal model of familial ALS. NAC was administered at 1% concentration in the drinking water from 4-5 weeks of age. The treatment caused a significantly prolonged survival and delayed onset of motor impairment in G93A mice treated with NAC compared to control mice. These results provide further evidence for the involvement of free radical damage in the G93A mice, and support the possibility that NAC, an over-the-counter antioxidant, could be explored in clinical trials for ALS.

N-Acetyl-l-cysteine protects SHSY5Y neuroblastoma cells from oxidative stress and cell cytotoxicity: effects on ß-amyloid secretion and tau phosphorylation

Abstract:
Redox changes within neurones are increasingly being implicated as an important causative agent in brain aging and neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson's disease (PD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Cells have developed a number of defensive mechanisms to maintain intracellular redox homeostasis, including the glutathione (GSH) system and antioxidant enzymes. Here we examine the effects of N-acetyl-l-cysteine (NAC) on ß-amyloid (Aß) secretion and tau phosphorylation in SHSY5Y neuroblastoma cells after exposure to oxidative stress inducing/cytotoxic compounds (H2O2, UV light and toxic Aß peptides). Aß and tau protein are hallmark molecules in the pathology of AD while the stress factors are implicated in the aetiology of AD. The results show that H2O2, UV light, Aß1-42 and toxic Aß25-35, but not the inactive Aß35-25, produce a significant induction of oxidative stress and cell cytotoxicity. The effects are reversed when cells are pre-treated with 30?mmNAC. Cells exposed to H2O2, UV light and Aß25-35, but not Aß35-25, secrete significantly higher amounts of Aß1-40 and Aß1-42 into the culture medium. NAC pre-treatment increased the release of Aß1-40 compared with controls and potentiated the release of both Aß1-40 and Aß1-42 in Aß25-35-treated cells. Tau phosphorylation was markedly reduced by H2O2 and UV light but increased by Aß25-35. NAC strongly lowered phospho-tau levels in the presence or absence of stress treatment.

IV. AMYOTROPHIC LATERAL SCLEROSIS (N=3)
A role of free radicals in the progression of ALS recently received support with the discovery of linkage of familial ALS (FALS) with mutations in the gene encoding CuZn SOD (SOD1)21. Levels of SOD1 are decreased in patients with FALS but are often norrnal in sporadic ALS. In a patient with FALS, FRESA analysis indicated an SOD1 activity of approximately 50% of the lower end of the normal range. The remaining FRESA profile was normal. NAC treatment has so far been unsuccessful in altering the progressive course of this patient's disease. In two patients with sporadic ALS, SOD1 activity was normal, but GSHpx and glutathione reductase activities were markedly decreased. In these patients NAC treatment may have modified the course of the disease as one patient (duration of treatment 12 months) has remained stable with an increase in grip strength. A second patient has only marginally progressed during 17 months of treatment with NAC. Recently, Louwerse et al.22 reported on a double-blind trial of NAC in 111 patients with ALS. Patients with limb onset but not bulbar onset of ALS had a 50% decrease in the one year mortality rate with NAC treatment.

For those who have trouble swallowing pills, the effervescent tablets are great! Just drop one in some good water (not tap or distilled) or juice and adjust the amount of liquid to taste.
